Corin Nemec SD Comiccon 2002 Report - popartsplace.com
August 10 2002
For those who have not read my article on Michael Shanks signing at the 2001 San Diego Comic Con that might be a good place to go get a better understanding of why I love to cover Stargate. There you will discover that Stargate is a mixture of the great loves of my life - two of which I spent four years in college studying, Classical Civilizations and Radio/Television/Film. So, for me, when Stargate comes to San Diego each year it is a great mix of work and fun, just as the show itself is all year long.
Last year Michael Shanks came, he signed until he was no longer positive he still knew his name, and then he left - with a huge stack of items to sign for con staff members, and others who had not been able to get in line but he, Light Speed Fine Art, and MGM wanted to make sure had something to take home with them.
This year Corin Nemec came - he was part of a panel with MGM President Hank Cohen and one of the writers/executive Producers, Joseph Malozzi. Then Corin Nemec went out to the autograph area & signed until his world was a bit blurry. I think he was at the very least overwhelmed by the support and loyalty of Stargate SG-1 fans.
The panel was an interesting experience, there were times when I had to wonder if Corin Nemec was curious why he had come. The fans were thrilled to see him, but like a boy nervous about asking a girl out on a first date, the fans were tongue tied and seemed unable to ask him questions. The look on his face when a question finally seemed meant just for him went from triumph and delight to utter confusion when he was asked if he would move 6 inches to his right to make a better angle for photographs. (There was sound equipment up on the table making it hard for half of the fans to see him.)
And yet he was grace under fire, or in this case amidst confusion, at all times. When a fan asked if he would wave to the camera so they could get a picture for a friend who wanted a shot of him waving at them he smiled, and remarked "still camera, still arm" and froze his arm in a good wave position so the picture wouldn't be fuzzy.
