July 28 1999
GOOD MORNING: The headlines of the horrendous quadruple murders in Merced makes you wonder: how long does it take for a television show to take its toll or make its mark on an embryonic killer? The case in point, or rather the lead character is Cary Stayner who has reportedly admitted killing four women in the Yosemite area. The supporting characters were his late brother Steven and the mini series about the Stayners, "I Know My First Name Is Steven," brother Cary, the parents and Steven's abductor-molester.

Nemic said he wondered what effect the airing of the mini had on Cary Stayner's life which followed. "When Steven came back at age 14 (after being held captive by a pervert kidnapper for seven years), all the family's attention turned 180 degrees from that which had been focused on Cary during those previous seven years. I'm not sure what effect that had on Cary throughout his life that followed -- or what affect the series had on him after it aired and gathered so much more public attention on the brothers."
