High Hopes DVD Review - IGN

We didn't have high hopes, but ...
Corin Nemec stars as Tom Murphy, an up-and-coming actor hoping to land a big part in a new Hollywood production. Tom and his slacker roommates (played by David Faustino and Jason Mewes) plan to finance their own feature film, but lack anything close to the amount they need to do it. Happenstance brings them into contact with a suitcase filled with extra-strength, government-issue marijuana and suddenly the guys have a plan. Girls, drugs, sex and money. What could go wrong?
Directed by Joe Eckardt, High Hopes is a surprisingly funny little film that advertises itself as a stoner comedy, but really isn't, despite the marijuana aspect. And Jason Mewes. At its heart, it's more of a slacker comedy involving hair-brained schemes and short-sighted ambition. The central plot revolves around Tom's desire to land a leading role in, of all things, the new James Bond film. The lengths to which he goes to achieve this nigh-impossible dream are hilarious, including using his voice-impressionist friend to pretend to be Sean Connery and put in a good word for him.
I think what sets this movie apart from most of it's weed-centric brethren is that the characters are all actually funny. A large portion of this is due to cameo after cameo by a veritable who's-who of B-list actors, each one playing a completely different-styled character, each one written impeccably. While being vulgar and earning it's R-rating, High Hopes strives to be funny first, and "adult" second. Corin Nemec plays an instantly likable, hard-working and good-natured main character, and even Faustino and Mewes (although they play roles very similar to their normal fare) manage to come across as decent people. Jason Marsden plays a deaf, mute character that also earns big laughs, while managing not to be too insulting or hurtful to people with those afflictions.
