Parker Lewis Can't Lose - The Complete Second Season DVD Review - IGN
January 29 2010
Another year of the beloved cult series comes to DVD with the release of Parker Lewis Can't Lose: The Complete Second Season. Season 2 of the early '90s FOX comedy continued where Season 1 left off, albeit with some cast changes. Parker's mom, Judy, got a big makeover when a new actress, Mary Ellen Trainor, took over the role. And Parker (Corin Nemec), Mikey (Billy Janye) and Jerry (Troy Slayten) began spending a lot of time at a local diner, where the good looking, effortlessly cool new character Nick (Paul Johansson) works, ready to dispense sage advice.
No one can accuse the producers of Parker Lewis of backing from the show's trademark offbeat, surreal humor in Season 2 – if anything, it went even further. The show began to break the fourth wall much more, with the characters subtly (or not so subtly) referencing the fact that they were in a television series from time to time. Some of those references are amusing to watch now, because they were very specifically about the show's timeslot, name checking series that followed it on FOX (In Living Color) or ran against it on another network (Eerie, Indiana).
As in Season 1, the show has few ongoing storylines, but the episodes keep the clever, out-there laughs coming, as we watch Shelley (Maia Brewton) join the over-the-top, Goth -inspired Dark Siders, Jerry play alongside Kubiac (Abraham Benrubi) on the football team, Mikey begin to blow off school and Ms. Musso (Melanie Chartoff) again facing off with the dastardly Dr. Pankow (Gettit Graham).
