‘Parker Lewis’ S2: Troubled teens tackling trauma - Screenology
January 11 2010
The early ‘90s Fox sitcom Parker Lewis Can’t Lose, the second season of which is being released on DVD on January 26, meets my basic criteria for a show to buy on DVD; it has clever innovations, ran for only a few seasons, and was not heavily syndicated.
Lewis tells the stories of Ferris Bueller-like high school student Parker Lewis and his buds, classmates, principal, sister, and parents. The second season is a bit darker than the first but continues the first season themes of surreal cartoonesque action, comic sound effects, and bright clothes and sets.
The colors of Parker’s trademark patterned shirt and the sets themselves were more subdued in the second season, and the plots dealt with teen angst much more than the hi-jinks that provided plots the first season.
The multiple pop culture references in the show did survive into the second season. Examples include the show being scheduled against 60 Minutes, Madonna and other pop stars of the day, and the movie Rain Man.
A first season plot generally had the highly popular Parker, played by Corin “Corky” Nemec and his two buds pulling a prank for the fun of it or to annoy their arch-enemies the harsh Principal Musso, her evil minion student Frank Lemmer, and the evil-minion-in-training Parker’s younger sister Shelly.
