Sleazy lawyers and heartless insurance companies are only a few of those spoofed in this Airplane!-esque send up of modern healthcare, as a high tech efficiency initiative is taken to hilarious lengths. Plagued by uninsured patients, greedy insurance companies and indifferent staff, North Mercy ("No Mercy") Hospital is on the verge of total collapse. To cut costs and malpractice suits, R.I.P Healthcare introduces MD 63 (a.k.a. Robo-Doc), a robotic doctor that can't make a mistake. An overzealous malpractice lawyer sees Robodoc as a threat to his livelihood, and joins forces with greedy, golf obsessed Dr. Callaby (Corin Nemec) in a plot to see Robodoc crushed into a tin can.

Totally Biased Fan Review:

There were a lot of signs that suggested this might be a crappy one - no real theatrical release, delayed DVD release for years and mixed reviews (some scathing). So, I'm happy to report that Robodoc was pretty entertaining and the best film I've seen associated with National Lampoon in a while.

While a lot of the humor is more amusing than "bust a gut" funny and its not a "laugh a minute" film, there are quite a few hilarious scenes littered throughout the picture. Its clear to me why the film suffered from mixed reviews. The studios have polarized audiences into two camps by releasing nothing but gross out, sex romp flicks (American Pie) for the youth market and cerebral "comedies" (Sideways) for the older film snobs.

Robodoc lies somewhere in the middle. Doug Gordon did a good job of balancing dark satire with pure silliness and result is a film that's going to appeal to people with reasonable attention spans in their 30's and 40's. Between my own healthcare experiences with aging parental units and the nightmarish exposes I've seen on the tube and docs like Sicko, I found myself nodding my head and rooting this film on.

The Good:

  • The scenes where Robodoc interacts with patients are hilarious.
  • Make sure to watch the "alternative ending," its ten times funnier than the normal one.
  • Will Haze was pitch-perfect as Robodoc.
  • Corin really got it to ham it up as Dr. Callaby (his ability to do those great funny faces came in handy in this role).
  • The PSA for the cross-eyed children's clinic.

The Bad:

  • RIPOFF: Michael Winslow is only in this movie for about 5 minutes. So, if you're expecting all those cool sound effects you're going to be disappointed.

The Ugly:

  • Nothing ugly to report... overall its a pretty good flick.

Recommendation:

Definetly worth a watch. If you're a cheap-ass you can watch Robodoc on demand through Netflix but I'm really glad I bought the DVD. The alternative ending is great and I enjoyed the rest of the DVD extras.

Boston Strangler... don't get your hopes up on that one
Not Mike Feifer's best work, plus Corin's only got a supporting role... not that much screen time. Dave Faustino tried (they didn't give him much to work with scriptwise), would like to see him in more dramatic roles, tho.

Well, I'm a cheap ass so I'm gonna watch it through Netflix, BUT I did buy Richard Speck which was worth it. I'm glad I didn't buy Ted Bundy though, No disrespect to Corin, but it was pretty bad. Lets hope The Boston Strangler doesn't suck as hard.
