Review
Undoubtedly one of the most memorable television movies ever produced, this powerful two-part miniseries left many viewers affected years after its broadcast and earned four Emmy nominations including Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Special for Corin Nemec.
I Know My First Name is Steven was based on the tragic, true story of Steven Stayner, a seven year old who was abducted from his hometown in Merced, California, in 1972 and held hostage for seven years. Forced to endure systematic abuse, Steven was motivated to escape in order to save another child from the horrors he had endured. When finally reunited with his real family, he faces a second ordeal when he must attempt to readjust to a normal family life.
The title for the film and book are taken from the first paragraph of Steven's written Police statement, given during the early hours of March 2, 1980 in Ukiah.
"My name is Steven Stainer. I am fourteen years of age. I don't know my true birthdate, but I use April 18, 1965. I know my first name is Steven, I'm pretty sure my last is Stainer, and if I have a middle name, I don't know it."
Gripping and heartwrenching, this story's message has lost none of its significance with the passing of time. While the DVD is bare bones (as is typical of Warner Brothers Archive) releases, I Know My First Name is Steven is a must buy for Corin Nemec fans or anyone who appreciates a great drama.
